Met Gala 2024: The Garden of Time

Style Tip

As a Style Coach, I assist my clients in everything from from helping them curate a wardrobe for their day to day to putting together a special occasion outfit. This year, I had the honor of styling a client for the famous Met Gala in NYC benefiting the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This one was especially fun given it was a once-in-a-lifetime event all about art, fashion and celebrities!

The 2024 Met Gala theme was “The Garden of Time,” which was inspired by the Anna Wintour Costume Center exhibit “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”  Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, Anna Wintour, and Zendaya served as co-chairs for the evening.

My client & I wanted to go with the garden theme and selected an embellished sequin floral gown & a silk floral appliqué purse that felt very on theme.  We kept the rest of the accessories more subdued as not to compete with her stunning gown! The Vogue magazine team requested a graphic showcasing all of the outfit details before the event; Anna Wintour and the Vogue team gave their seal of approval of my client’s look!

When helping a client with a special occasion outfit, it’s important to think about her body type and frame so the gown is showstopping BUT doesn’t wear her.  While the Met Gala is definitely an opportunity to be bold, my client is only 5’3 and is quite petite so we wanted the gown to be fabulous without overpowering her.  The gown is completely embellished in multi-color sequins for a ‘wow factor’ but the silhouette is very sleek.

After finalizing her gown and accessories, I helped her secure a talented hair and makeup artist in NYC to help us complete the entire Met Gala look.  Enlisting these experts ensured she looked AND felt her best!   It was such an honor & amazing experience to be a part of my client’s special event!

Style Tip: The biggest mistake I see when it comes to selecting what to wear for a special occasion is failing to plan ahead!  Waiting until the last minute to shop for an outfit is usually a recipe for disaster as you’ll find yourself buying something that’s “just okay.”  Instead, plan ahead by understanding the dress code and theme (if applicable) and carefully selecting an outfit that feels authentic to your personal style.  And don’t forget about the ‘finishing touches’ that will ensure you feel pulled together and your look doesn’t feel fussy.  This can include proper undergarments, fashion tape, alterations, and of course hair & makeup.

I love assisting my 1:1 clients and members of my online communities in dressing for their special events! For more style inspiration and tips, visit the SYC Instagram page HERE.
