New Year’s Dreams
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.
Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.
So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.
Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.
Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”
― Neil Gaiman
And like that, a new year is here! We’re barely closing in on the first full week of 2016, and already some things feel like old hat. The New Year is simply a measure of time created to mark time and say that, “Yes, Earth has successfully completed one full rotation around the Sun.” But to us, it’s so much more than that. It’s a universally agreed upon marker in time to start over, start fresh. Clean slate and all. It can also serve as a reminder of where we were this time last year, what we want to achieve this year, and where we see ourselves next year!
This year don’t just make a list of “New Year’s Resolutions”. Instead, create a list of things that you desire to live your best life! To help keep you on track and inspire you all year long, here are a couple of suggestions to help guide you to create the ultimate New Year’s Dreams List:
It takes time, a game plan & guidance
While big goals like “I’m going to exercise every day”, I’m going to lose 20 lbs in a month”, “I’m going to clean out all of my closets” sound like amazing New Years Resolutions, without guidance, a realistic timeline and a full proof plan these resolutions can set you up for disappointment & discouragement. It’s not that you can’t do it, but the moment you miss a couple workouts, cave and eat that pint of ice cream, or cleanse half of your closet before giving up, you’ll start to feel guilty and shy away from your goals or abandon them all together. Here’s the key: BIG change happens in SMALL steps over the course of time. As a Style Coach, I work with my clients over an extended amount of time to help them achieve their style goals AND keep them. Sustainable, long lasting results don’t just happen overnight. Enlisting an expert (whether a professional or trusted friend) to keep you on track and help you reach your goals is one of the most valuable means of achieving results that will last a lifetime.
State it in the positive
At the heart of your list and goals for the New Year should be becoming the happy and healthiest version of you! Often our goals are motivated by areas of our life we dislike but it’s about getting more living out of LIFE. Love is always a stronger and better motivator than dislike or fear. Instead of saying, “I really hate my body so I want to lose weight in 2016” reframe that statement in the positive by stating, “I want to nourish my body & ultimately lose weight in 2016 through more self care such as massage, walks, keeping healthy snacks on hand, etc.”. See the difference? By stating what you desire in the positive and feminine, you are more likely to feel motivated and not deprived or defeated.
Manifest your desire list
One of the most important means of creating your best year yet comes from actually writing down and then visualizing your desires & dreams. Your mind is your greatest gift and is often the key to breaking through whatever is holding you back from achieving the things you want out of life. By spending time weekly focusing on your New Year’s Dreams list, whether it’s taking a long hot bath, journaling, meditating, yoga, or going for a walk, you are more likely to start believing that you can achieve these dreams and that they are part of you. But don’t think that you’ll lose 20 lbs. sitting on the sofa simply by visualizing, action is an important step in this process. Visualizing + action are a powerful combination! You’ll be amazed at the end of 2016 when you look at your New Year’s Dreams list of what became reality! I personally am always in amazement at the end of the year at the dreams that came to fruition.
